Thuja occidentalis
Information
Substance information
Prepared from the fresh green twigs and leaves of the Thuja occidentalis tree, a member of the Cupressaceae family, native to North America. The essential oil contains thujone, a neurotoxin in large doses.
Proving
Proved by Samuel Hahnemann; published in Materia Medica Pura and Chronic Diseases
Essence
Thuja reflects the shadow of suppressed self-expression. Its core is the split between outer composure and inner corrosion. The sycotic miasm brings overgrowth, secrecy, shame, and dissimulation. The patient may appear polished or reserved but wrestles internally with feelings of uncleanliness, fragmentation, and invasion—whether through vaccination, infection, or moral guilt. It is a remedy of duality: the seen vs. the hidden, the body vs. the perceived foreign presence. Ideal for aftereffects of vaccination, gonorrhoea, or suppressed skin ailments.

Symptoms
Mind
Thuja occidentalis presents a vivid inner world full of fixed ideas, duality, and delusion. The patient may believe they are made of glass or that something foreign is living inside them—”as if a living animal were in the abdomen” [Hahnemann]. A sense of being possessed, fragmented, or impure is strong. Great sensitivity to others’ opinions. Marked guilt, shame, and secrecy, often linked to past sexual experiences, suppressed guilt, or vaccination. Depression with religious melancholia. Secretive, closed-off personality. Obsessive-compulsive traits common—compelled to count, arrange, or clean. Loquacious yet anxious. Desires solitude but fears abandonment. Deep insecurities masked by stiffness or superiority.
Sleep
Unrefreshing sleep. Sleeplessness before midnight. Dreams anxious, sexual, or confused. Wakes often with cold sweats or trembling. Sleep disturbed by urinary urges or sensation of falling.
Dreams
Dreams of falling, of being pursued, of dead relatives. Sexual dreams with emissions. Dreams of shameful acts. Dreams repeat night after night. Fragmented sleep with vivid imagery.
Generalities
Left-sided complaints, sycotic background. Tendency to overgrowth: warts, tumours, polyps. Sensitive to cold, damp, and suppression. Symptoms often contradictory. Emaciation with distended abdomen. Ill effects of vaccination, suppressed gonorrhoea, or skin eruptions. Periodicity. Feels fragile, broken, or unclean.
Fever
Chilliness predominates. Cold shivers down back. Heat flushes followed by sweat. Night sweats offensive. Tendency to fevers with chill > warmth. Heat of face only.
Chill / Heat / Sweat
Coldness of single parts (e.g. left foot, spot on back). Sweat profuse at night. Sweat oily, with odour. Chills without thirst. Perspiration mainly on uncovered parts. Heat alternating with cold spots.
Head
Headaches primarily in the left frontal region, pressing or bursting, < exertion, tea, mental strain. Hair falls in circular patches (alopecia areata). Cold, damp head with a sensation of pressure from within. Pain as if pierced with a nail (left frontal). Head feels “as if enlarged.” Sweat only on uncovered parts, especially at night. Scalp sensitive and oily.
Eyes
