Plumbum metallicum is prepared from pure metallic lead. Historically, lead has been used in plumbing, paints, glazes, cosmetics, ammunition, and industrial materials, though now largely restricted due to its known toxicity. In toxicology, it produces progressive paralysis, sclerotic degeneration of nerves, muscles and tissues, and intense constipation with abdominal retraction. In homeopathy, it is a deep-acting antipsoric with profound effects on the nervous system, musculature, gastrointestinal tract, and mind, with marked tendencies to constriction, sclerosis, and retraction.

Historically used in plumbing (hence the term “plumber”), paints, cosmetics, coins, and pottery glazing; abandoned due to its systemic toxicity

– Proved by Hahnemann; symptoms further confirmed by toxicological data and clinical use, especially in chronic neurodegenerative diseases

  • Nervous system – particularly the motor nerves: paralysis, sclerotic degeneration
  • Muscles – progressive weakness, atrophy, contraction
  • Gastrointestinal system – constipation, colic, retracted abdomen
  • Spinal cord – lower motor neuron dysfunction
  • Mind – paranoia, sluggishness, melancholia
  • Urinary system – albuminuria, nephritis
  • Circulation – arteriosclerosis, hypertension
  • Extremities – trembling, wrist drop, cramps
  • Hard pressure
  • Cold applications (sometimes for cramps)
  • Lying on the painful side
  • Bending double during abdominal pain
  • Long rest
  • Night
  • Touch and motion
  • Mental exertion
  • Suppression of discharges (especially menstruation or perspiration)
  • Sudden emotions
  • Alcohol
  • Cold, damp weather
  • Alumina – Constipation, but more mental confusion and dryness
  • Zincum – Twitching and spinal exhaustion, but more restlessness
  • Argentum nitricum – Paralysis and gastric symptoms, but more impulsiveness and anxiety
  • Causticum – Paralysis with tension, but warmer and more emotional
  • Secale – Paralysis with burning and cold skin, more hemorrhagic tendencies
  • Gelsemium – Flaccid paralysis, but with more generalised weakness and trembling
  • Complementary: Alumina, Baryta carb
  • Antidotes: Opium, Nux vomica
  • Follows well: Secale, Belladonna
  • Inimical: Phosphorus (opposite miasmatic polarity)

Plumbum metallicum embodies the rigid withdrawal of life force into the depths—retraction, slowness, and constriction. The patient slowly degenerates, both mentally and physically. Paralysis, emaciation, and obstruction are not sudden but insidiously progressive. The soul contracts inward, cutting off communication with others and the environment. It suits those in advanced chronic states, often with sclerosis, calcification, or neurological decay. The patient resists change and isolates within self-constructed walls of fear, rigidity, and internal pressure.

  • Key remedy in progressive paralysis, such as ALS, MS, and post-polio syndromes
  • Effective in lead poisoning with neuro-gastrointestinal symptoms
  • Marked results in constipation with abdominal retraction
  • Suits patients with wasting, tendon contraction, or muscle atrophy
  • Indicated in paralysis of bladder, bowel, or limbs

Mind

  • Delusions: pursued, poisoned
  • Mental slowness
  • Monomania
  • Indifference, apathy

Abdomen

  • Pain, drawing in of navel
  • Abdomen retracted, hard
  • Colic better bending double

Extremities

  • Paralysis of hands
  • Atrophy of limbs
  • Pain as if tendons were too short

Constipation

  • No desire, with inactivity
  • Stools hard, round, black
  • Ineffectual urging
