Aloe Socotrina
Information
Substance information
A gum-resin obtained from the leaves of Aloe perryi or related aloe species native to the island of Socotra. The resin is rich in anthraquinones and traditionally known for its potent purgative properties.
Proving
Proved by Dr. Helbig in Germany and confirmed by Hahnemann; further symptoms contributed by Hughes, Allen, and others through toxicological reports and clinical confirmations
Essence
Aloe socotrina embodies the sluggish, overloaded, and congested human organism—laden with bile, burdened by lifestyle excess, and expressing its stagnation through violent evacuations and mental torpor. The remedy has a peculiar combination of urgency and inertia—an indolent temperament paired with explosive, often involuntary discharges. It suits those who are dull, lazy, overfed, sedentary, and troubled by portal congestion, venous stasis, and rectal dysfunction.

Symptoms
Mind
Aloe patients exhibit a profound mental indolence, with marked irritability and discontent, especially when unoccupied. [Clarke] notes a sullen, gloomy mood with aversion to conversation or effort. There is a sense of internal congestion mirrored by emotional stagnation—lacking motivation, with an irritable, lazy dissatisfaction. Children may be cross, obstinate, and dislike being touched. The mental picture often reflects the same sluggish, congested dynamic as the bowels—slothful, loaded, and reactive. [Kent] emphasised the connection between mental torpor and bowel dysfunction, particularly when stool is retained or suppressed.
Sleep
Restless, unrefreshing sleep. Awakened by abdominal pain or urgency to stool. Dreams of fire, danger, or accidents. Waking too early, particularly before dawn, with strong urging for stool.
Dreams
Vivid, anxious dreams. Themes of falling, flight, or excretion. Dreams often reflect daytime anxieties or digestive discomfort.
Generalities
Sluggish, congested, and reactive. Aloe suits the sedentary, plethoric, venous constitution. All complaints are associated with portal congestion, abdominal fullness, rectal weakness, and sluggish liver activity. Complaints are aggravated by heat, inactivity, and after eating.
Fever
Fever from digestive disturbance. Heat in face and head with cold extremities. Alternating chills and heat. Perspiration profuse on forehead.
Chill / Heat / Sweat
Chilliness before stool. Heat follows abdominal pains. Sweat offensive and profuse during sleep. Cold feet with heat in head.
Head
Congestive headaches, particularly in the forehead, often alternate with or are relieved by stool. Heat and fullness in the head, with a sensation as if the brain would protrude. Headaches are worse from heat, better from cold air or after bowel movement. [Hering] and [Boericke] note a peculiar headache that improves with diarrhoea or stool. Vertigo on rising or from sun exposure. Sensation of heaviness or pulsation, especially in the temples.
Eyes
Congested appearance, with bloodshot eyes and a heavy, drooping sensation in the lids. Black spots before the vision. Dryness of the eyes with aching over the orbits. Pressure from within outward. Lids sticky or glued in the morning. Eyes feel weak and strained, especially after reading.
Ears
Buzzing, fullness, or humming in ears. Heat behind the ears. Not a major sphere, though symptoms may accompany head congestion. Occasionally, sharp, stitching pains occur during headaches or fever.
Nose
Epistaxis (nosebleed), especially upon waking or after exertion. Dryness in nasal passages. Coryza with frequent sneezing, sometimes alternating with rectal symptoms. The nose may feel hot or stuffed in warm rooms.
Face
Red, flushed face during headache or after meals. Yellow, earthy complexion in chronic liver or bowel cases. Twitching of facial muscles. Sensation of tension or pressure in the cheeks. Peri-oral itching may accompany rectal irritation.
Mouth
Dryness with a bitter or sour taste in the morning. Tongue coated yellow or brown. Burning or rawness of the palate. Aphthae or vesicles may develop during digestive disturbances. Breath foul and sour, especially in the morning.
Teeth
Toothache in decayed teeth, worse after eating. Gums spongy, tender, and may bleed. Often secondary to general digestive derangements. No characteristic tooth pathology, but pain may radiate to jaw or ear.
Throat
Rawness or scraping sensation. Hawking of thick mucus. Throat may feel constricted during headaches or fever. Slight hoarseness in chronic sufferers.
Chest
Oppression of chest, worse in warm rooms. Shortness of breath with abdominal distension. Stitching pains under ribs, especially the left side. Respiratory complaints often secondary to digestive disorders. Cough loose, worse in the morning.
Heart
Palpitations after eating or while lying on the left side. Rush of blood to the chest with a full, bounding pulse. Feeling of heaviness or suffocation. Pulsation felt in the whole body during fever or excitement.
Respiration
Dyspnoea from abdominal distension. Short breath when walking. Panting after stool or with flatus. Breathing shallow and unsatisfying, particularly in warm, stuffy rooms.
Stomach
Sensation of heaviness, fullness, and pressure in the stomach after eating even a small amount. Appetite variable—ravenous one moment, then complete aversion. Regurgitation of sour fluid. Rumbling and gurgling with distension. Aloe is particularly suited to those who suffer gastric torpor, especially after rich meals or excessive alcohol. [Clarke] mentions nausea and vomiting followed by urgent stool.
Abdomen
Abdomen feels full, bloated, and heavy as lead. Keynote: “dragging down sensation” as if everything would fall out of the pelvis. [Boericke] describes constant urging for stool, especially in the morning. Rumbling, gurgling, and sudden urgency with fear of losing control. Cutting, cramping pains, particularly around the navel, often driving the patient from bed in the early morning. Flatulence is copious, hot, and offensive, providing temporary relief.
Rectum
The rectum is the primary sphere of Aloe. Constant sensation of fullness and pressure. Urging to stool that is sudden, irresistible, and may lead to involuntary evacuation, especially on passing gas. Stool is soft, jelly-like, yellowish, and gushing. Keynote: Feeling of weakness in the sphincter—as if the anus is too open or cannot hold back the stool. Haemorrhoids are prominent—large, blue, protruding, and sore—often accompanied by a burning, raw sensation. [Hering] notes “prolapsus ani during every stool.” Worse after eating, better from cold compresses. Anal itching, especially at night.
Urinary
Pressure in the bladder with frequent urging. Burning during and after urination. Urine scanty, high-coloured, and often passed involuntarily with flatus or stool. Dribbling or incontinence in old men with prostatic enlargement. Gravelly sediment in chronic cases.
Food and Drink
Craving for juicy or cooling things. Aversion to meat, milk, and rich food. Symptoms worse after beer, wine, or overeating. Hunger alternating with fullness. Gas and heaviness even after light meals.
Male
Seminal emissions at night with lascivious dreams. Erections without desire. Dragging pain in testicles. Enlarged prostate with associated rectal or bladder symptoms. Itching of scrotum with eruptions or sweat. Sexual indifference in chronic sufferers.
Female
Menses too early and too copious. Pain and heaviness in the pelvis, as if everything would prolapse. Leucorrhoea acrid, yellow, and associated with rectal fullness. [Clarke] notes rectal and haemorrhoidal aggravation during menses. Itching of labia and anus. Suited to sedentary women with sluggish portal circulation and chronic constipation.
Back
Dragging in lumbar spine, especially before stool. Pain extending into sacrum. Sensation as if back would break from pressure. Itching or eruptions on coccyx or perianal area. Sore bruised feeling in sacral region.
Extremities
Weakness in lower limbs, especially after stool or during menses. Cold hands and feet. Cramps in calves and toes. Trembling or unsteadiness when walking. Heaviness in thighs with desire to sit or lie down.
Skin
Burning, itching eruptions, especially around the anus, perineum, and inner thighs. Excoriation from stool. Eczema worse in heat or after scratching. Sweat profuse and sometimes offensive. Herpetic eruptions in perianal region.
Differential Diagnosis

- Podophyllum – Profuse morning diarrhoea, but Podophyllum has more gushing and painless stool
- Hamamelis – Haemorrhoids with bleeding, but Aloe has more protrusion and jelly-like mucus
- Collinsonia – Haemorrhoids during pregnancy, but without Aloe’s rectal urgency
